Meter Tails
A meter tail is a cable that connects the electricity meter to the consumer unit in homes and businesses. They work by providing a direct path for electricity to flow from your meter to your consumer unit (fuse box), where the power can then be distributed to different circuits in the property.
These cables are installed during new electrical setups and may need replacement in three main situations:
- When the existing cables show signs of wear
- When the cables are too small for the power requirements
- When new electrical appliances are added that increase power needs
The correct sizing and proper installation of meter tails is crucial since they carry the property's entire electrical supply. This high-capacity role means they must be robust enough to safely handle the full electrical load flowing through them.
